Parkinson's Support Group
April 2009 will mark the 24th year for a self-help support group for Parkinson's patients and their caregivers, started in April 1985 by Donna Dorros, a member of Covenant, along with her husband, Sid, a Parkinson's patient. They recognized a need for a local group that could offer a weekly exercise program along with time for sharing and caring. While the group did not begin at Covenant, it relocated here in 1989, thanks to an invitation from Pastor Dave Stum. Sid passed away in 1993, but Donna has continued to lead the group.
The group meets weekly on Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. to noon, in Covenant's Fellowship Hall. In addition to an exercise session conducted by a physical therapist, there is a strong education component, as well as sharing of coping skills. There are occasional speakers and social activities. Anyone who is interested in learning more about Parkinson's disease is invited to attend.
